The Gym in the Age of Social Media

“You need to do better. Mind your own business.” – Joey Swoll

In the age of social media, it seems as though there are influencers everywhere posting their workout regimens in the gym. The gym has become a show for everyone to see. I’ve worked out in many gyms, including in the last six months, and I’ve never seen anyone filming themselves working out.

I am writing this article for two reasons: I don’t need another dessert this week and I know some of you are heading the gym this time of year. Many for the first time. While I think it’s a mistake for most people to buy gym memberships to fulfill their futile attempt at getting into shape, people are still going to go.

I dislike going to the gym. It can be crowded. I will have to work around other people and possibly have to wait for the equipment I want to use. I don’t like being told what to wear. When it’s hot in the gym, I don’t want to be told to keep my shirt on. I don’t like that some men in the gym think they can score a date by bothering me during a workout. I only use gyms when I travel. I prefer working out at home.

One thing is for sure, I do not want to be part of someone’s social media video. There are many influencers that think they own the gym when they come to film. Don’t glance their way or walk between them and their camera. It doesn’t matter if they are blocking everyone else. Oh, and if you do something they don’t understand, be ready to be part of their fail video.

If people are allowed to film in the gym, I wouldn’t want to view their content. Filming is just plain selfish and rude. If you want to film a video, do it at home. The gym should be a place where anyone can feel comfortable coming to, regardless of your fitness level.

Here are my thoughts on social media and the gym:

  • If you want to film at the gym, be polite to the others there. Everyone is there to workout, not just you.
  • If someone is filming and you don’t want to be in their video, move or speak up.
  • If the influencer is rude, report them to the gym management.
  • If you see someone struggling, help them, don’t make fun of them.

If you do go to the gym, stick with it. Don’t let anyone else ruin your experience.
